The fish farming project: encouraging the development of sustainable fish farming industries

The fish farming industry in the Republic of the Congo is a strategic sector for food security, job creation and economic development. However, it faces major challenges such as the sustainable management of aquatic resources, the improvement of production infrastructures and the fight against pollution.

Since 2023, the IECD, in partnership with the COFAD consultancy firm, has been running ambitious fish farming projects to boost the economy of the Kouilou region around Pointe-Noire. The aim is to create sustainable jobs, improve the incomes of those involved in the industry and boost the supply of fresh, high-quality fish for the local market in Pointe-Noire and the surrounding area.

The project focuses on four key areas:

• Training and support: with the assistance of Congo Entreprises Developement, strengthening the skills of players in the fish farming sector through practical training and specialist advice.
• Sustainable farming practices: co-constructing farming models that are adapted to the local context and are both technically and economically viable.
• Increase local supply: stimulate freshwater fish production to meet growing local market demand.
• Creating jobs and opportunities: consolidating existing jobs and generating new sources of income for players in the value chain.
