Context and Considerations

The gap between the training which the young people receive and the actual skills the hiring companies need reveals some faults in the Lebanese education system. It is necessary to modernize its professional training frame by establishing closer links with the business sphere. Deprived of the necessary qualifications, many graduates struggle when they try to integrate the labour market. On the other hand, some professional sectors with employment opportunities (such as electro-technical jobs) are suffering from a lack of qualified professionals, which hinders their growth.

Solution Proposed

The IECD has developed a training program in order to enhance the professional integration of young Lebanese. This program was based on an analysis of both the companies’ and the young graduates’ needs and it enjoys the support of the Schneider Electric company foundation ( http://www.schneider-electric.fr/). The project strengthens the pedagogical and technical means of 10 professional partner schools which are specialized in electro-technical training.
The program has established four main objectives:

-   Strengthen the existing training frame and propose a new electro-technical diploma after having identified the skills the companies require.
-   Equip the partner vocational training centres with the necessary technical and didactical material.
-   Strengthen the teachers’ and trainers’ technical and pedagogical capacities, done in cooperation with business professionals.
-   Promote structured and long-term partnerships between the training centres and the electro-technical companies.

The pedagogical and technical know-how of several French institutions (such as the Parisian Academy and the school Jean Baptiste de la Salle - Notre-Dame de la Compassion http://www.jeanbaptistedelasalle.com/) have been mobilized lastingly.

Impact and Results

Six schools are currently benefitting from the project because their equipments and their trainers are being strengthened.  Four other partner schools will join the project in 2010. The frame of a new electro-technical diploma has been designed and presented to the Lebanese Ministry of Education. In total, 1650 young people will have benefitted from the project between 2007 and 2010.
